FIRE ON BOARD SHIP.
»■ GREAT DAMAGE TO VESSEL AND CARGO. [united press association.] Sydney, January 14. A fire is raging furiously m the four masted ship Talavera (Captain Robson) ' which arrived from London on December 31st, after an 85 days passage. The fire commenced under the forebatch but owing to the dense smoke the firemen were unable to descend into the hold to grapple with the flames. The whole of the lower hold between the fore and main hatchs is burning. The vessel and the remaining portion of the cargo valued at £35,000, 13 owned by Messrs Hardie and Coy., of Glasgow, and she is an exceptionally fine specimen of marine architecture. Later. The fire on the Talavera has been extinguished. The Sydney portion of the cargo was discharged prior to the fire. Tha Newcastle consignment has principally suffered. The fire is supposed to have originated m a shipment of wax matches. The flames burned fiercely m the lower and tween decks, the remaining portion of cargo being greatly damaged by water but it is impossible to compute the exact amonnt at present. Received January 15, 2.35 a.m. j Sydney, January 14. Nearly seven hundred tons of cargo m tbe ship Talavera were found to be more or less injured, after the fire was subdued. The heat also caused some of her plates to buckle and the damage to the vessel is esti* mated at £3000. The amount is covered by insurance in.London. ——Mac———.
