LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
The Speaker took the chair at 2.30 p.m. The Hon. the Attorney-General moved that the Council do now adjourn. Before the question was put, The Hon. Sir G. S. WHITMORE protested against the Council pursuing the time-honoured custom of adjourning when there was a vote of want-of-confidence being discussed m another place. He understood thoroughly that the Government felt disinclined to deal with any Bill having for its object any Government policy. But there were a number of Bills which were not policy Bills on the Order Paper, and which might be proceeded with. The business of the country demanded that the Council should proceed with their work, and therefore he for one protested against the moiion for the adjournment. The ATTORNEY-GENERAL quite agreeed with what had falUn from his friend opposite, and if m future the Council could see their way out of the difficulty, he for one would be exceedingly pleased to acquiesce. The better plan would be for the hon. and gallant member to give notice of a motion on the subject. The Hon. Sir G. S. WHITMORE gave notice that on the following day lie would move that on future occasions when a vote of want of confidence was b«ring debated elsewhere, the Legislative Council do not adjourn, but proceed with the business of the country. The motion for the adjournmant was then put and carried, and the Council, at 2.50 p.m., adjourned to the following day.
