A pro- I position-was made sonic time ago to devote it to the Public Library but there was considerable opposition, and the general tendency of the committee seemed to be m favor of erecting a memorial of some kind. Meanwhile ths committee voted a number of medals and other small sums which were considered to be frittoi-ins? iway money and met with a good deal of 3ontemptupus criticism. The supporters ' 3f the Library proposal increased m > ; strength and to-night on the moliou of i Sir W. Fitzherbert it was decided by 26 io 17 to devote the money to placing pictures and books relating to the early i settlement of ths colony ia the public : Library. •
