A CORRECTION.

10 THE EDITOB. Sib,— With yonr. permission, I would like to explain an error that o ept into the report of the proceedings of the Borough Council of last Friday night, re the raising of the rates. After the proposition to increase th 9 rates was proposed and seconded, I proposed the amendment, and m the report I was made to say that an eightpenny or ninepenny rate was sufficient for general purposes. Now, sir, what I really did say, and my amendment was, that the general rate be struck at Is £d m the pound, which I thought was sufficient. I was elected to office pledged to the burgesses who elected me to oppose any raising of the rates, but was willing to vote for the amendment as I proposed. I well knew that it was ridiculous to lower the rates, as it would be impossible to work our Borough on & lower rate than that being collected, bnfc with true economy, the streets and footpaths could have been kept m fair order on the rates that were struck last year. Trusting that when next year's rates are struck we shall be enabled to reduce them again, and thus lighten the heavilyburdened burgesses of our Borough,— l am, etc., C. Patchetx. April 28, 1890.
