A CHURCH DIFFICULTY. i MR GLADSTONE AND THE EIGHT HOURS MOVEMENT. THE LABOUR QUESTION. [united pbess association.] London, December 16. , Mrs FitzGeorge, wife of the Duke of Cambridge, is dying. The Pall Mall Gazette states that the Archbishop of Canterbury will not consecrate Canon Smith Bishop of Sydney, on the ground that his election was irregular. The Rev. Mr Smith fears it will be necessary to re-elect him, owing to Bishop Kenyon, of Adelaide, persisting m his protest. Mr Gladstone writes that infirmity will jprevent his initiating an Eight Hours Bill m Parliament, but he promises to give any such .measure his unbiassed attention. Lord E. Churchill considers the ideal system of labour would be to diminish, the number of unemployed and increase the comfort of the masses by compensating employers for any loss incurred. America would be certain to imitate such example. He fears, however, the competition of cheap European labour, and it would be essential that foreign paupers should be excluded. Hanlan has challenged the world to row on the Thames.
