A DERANGEMENT OF THE LIVER THE CAUSE OF DISEASE IN THE STOMACH, KIDNEYS, AND NERVOUS SYSTEM, Below will be found a biief summary of a Lecture upon the Liver deliveredjbe fora the Boleofcifi College of Medicine, by DR J. HAYDOCK. The Liver has been known as the great hlood'Viaher and blood-purifier of tbe Circulation. From its size and spongy structure, it plays a most important part m the animal economy, as regards assimilation and nutrition. Food taken m the month and acted upon by the digestive organs of the stomach is converted into Glncos c and Peptone, and m these forms enters the Portal vein. Here, by the action of the liver, I these substances are converted into a form of sugar and pass out of the liver by a large vein called the Hepatic vein, into the general circulation. The new material I now formed serves two purposes, viz : the maintenance of heat m the body and assisting m the cell growth of the system. Dr Murchison Bays, '• The composition of bile and its secretion is very compley. It is constantly being secreted by the liver, and, increasing suddenly before eating, gradually decreases as soon as the appetite is satisfied and feedingceases." Now, if this most important organ of the body becomeß torpid, or the passage of bile interfered with, emaciation and disease ensue. 1 note eight marked peculiarities that now occnr, and which we all know of : — 1 . The patient complains of a feeling of weight and fullness of the stomach. 2. Distension of the bowels by wind. 3. Heartburn. 4. A feeling of weariness, pains m the limbs and great sleepiness after meals. 5. A bad taste m the month, especially m the morning, and furred tongue. 6. Constipation, with an occasions attack of diarrhoea. 7. Head ache m front of head. 8. Depression of spirits and great melanoholy, with lassitnde and a disposition to leave everything for to-morrow. AH of the above symptoms go to show functional derangement of the liver, and sow comes the great importance of any error made as to the condition of the patient. He should immediately provide himself with a LIYfiK STIMULANTj the most common, form of which is a Pill. Daily experience shows that this, when the Pill is compound d properly, 1b the readiest mode of inciting and promoting the action of the Liver, and can be almost always relied on, I have devoted many years of my life, aa many of you now before me know, to compounding a Pill that will act readily and systematically as & Bilious Eemedy. Ido not believe m great purgatives, and therefore have made a Pill, one of which is an active and thorough doae, I have called it Dr. Haydock's Hew Liver Pill (Sugar Coated.)
