Thompson addressed the electors of City North at .the Temperance Hall tonight when ;he •■ reviewed •. .the*. work of the Session and advocated retrenchment and encouragement of local industries and maintenance of the present education eystern. He received a vote' of thanks and confidence. A deputation of Coromandel electorn to-day waited upon Mr J. Mackay. who is a candidate for City North, asking him to stand for Coromandel against the present member, Mr Mackay stated that if a sufficiently strong requisition were presented to him he would probably accede to the request. Chbistchukoh, July 17. Sir Julius Yogel will address his constituents on Tuesday. "Mr R. Moore, Mayor of Katapoi, has come out against Mr Edward Richardson m response to a requisition with 450 signatures. Mr Lough/ey ia definitely out for Llnwood. Haweea, July 18. Mr Finnerty has retired from the Egmonfc contest. Woodvhxe, July 18. Ia response to a requisition Sir George Grey has consented to deliver an address here at an early date, .-.'.. Nelson, July 16. Mr Hurathouse, who has represented Motaeba for eleven years, hag addressed j large meetings at Motueka and Moutere, j and has received votes of confidence. He urged that there was no necessity for increased taxation, and pointed out where he believed £190,000 flould be saved. By putting the railway grain rates at the old v figure he calculated to increase the receipta by £80,000. The rates on native lands paid under the Native and Crown Ztanda Hating Act would tafce from the natives £1500. He would strike off the Forests Department and save £10, 000 and by reducing the officera of the Permanent Militia from that department would save £15,000. He would cut off the Governot's allowance by L 3000,. reduce the honorarium to Ll5O and the Minleters' salaries by L 250 each. He would also cut down the travelling allowances and save LBOOO under the legislative head. He wouW save the L7OOO vote to the Univeralty, and L 28.000 by giving up tha San Francisco mall service. He would effect the proposed Baying of L 20,000 by a percentage reduction of the salaries of civil servants, and another L 20.000 by making them work from 9 till 5. This made the amonnfc, but he indicated farther cutting down, opposing expenditure on higher education, though supporting the primary system m its intensity. He condemned every act of the Government that he referred to, and spoke very_ warmly. He stated that he had voted against their proposals, especially the iniquitous scheme of taxation. He said that during the elections six men would be found prepared to carry oat the retrenchment proposals he had referred to, and he looked to the work being done by a new set of men whose past actions cbuld hot be attacked. If Bnch a Ministry effeoted such savings no future one would dare to go back to the present extravagance. He said, however, that if Sir Eobert Stout was prepared to carry on the Government without further taxation he was willing fco follow him. t Mr Kerr, who is opposing Mr Hursthouse, has been receiving votes of confidence m the Waimea part of the electorate. He also favours retrenchment, but is a warm supporter o! the Government, and a protectionist. ' Mr Gibba, the third candidate, who ia a Government supporterris also epeaking. The fight will be a warm one; Auckland, July 18. Sir Wm. Fox means to contest the Ponsonby seat, and addresses a public meeting to-night. ,',„• Hawbba, July 18.
