MARLBOROUGH F. C. V. WAITOHI F. C.

On Saturday last the members of the Marlborough Football Club visited Pioton to try conclusions with the Waitohi Club, leaving Blenheim about one o'clock m £ drag driven by that general favorite, " Scotty." They arrived safely m Pioton about quarter past three ; finding, however, that the match was to be played at Waikawa, they journeyed on, and arrived on the field of play shortly before four o'clock. There they found their opponents assembled and ready fcr the fray. The game wa3 started without any delay. The Waitohis having the kick off, and playing from the western end of the field, were soon playing on the defensive, the ball being within a few yards of their line, Poole, Hathaway, and Gaukrodger, $11 striving very hard for a score. Their efforts were, however, unrewarded, aa a force down only resulted. From the kickoff Poole secured the ball, and, with one of his brilliant dashes carried it right on the Waitohis 1 line. Here a succession oi scrimmages were formod, of which tha Waitohis had the best, gradually working the ball back into the middle of the ground. Shortly after, Gaukrodger, froiri a pass by Hathaway, made the run of the day ; passing all his opponents he grounded the ball safely behind the line. No gaol was scored from the try, and half time was immediately called. The second spell was started by L. Dodson taking the kickoft', and sending the ball well into hi 9 opponents' quarters; the ball being mulled by the Waitohis' back was secured by Buick, who was only stopped, a yard from the line. Scrummages were again formed, the Waitohis fqrcing the play for the first time into their opponents' quarters. The game, however, was very shortly shifted by Poole, who made a splendid run, being only collared on crossing the Waitohis' line by Arrowsmitti. , The maul, however, resulted m favor of Arrowsmith. No further advantage was scored by either side, and on time being called the game stood, Marlborough 1 try to Waitohi nil. For the losers Godfrey, Hood, Arrowsmith, and Petherick played a capital back game, while T. Mowat, Pugh (2), Campbell, and Law played a hard forward game, Campbell being especially conspicuous. It ia only fair to the Marlborough team to state that during the whole of the game they played one man short, and part of tha game with two men short.
