THE MAIL TRANSIT QUESTION.

Paris, July 15, Sir Graham Berry and Sir Saul Samuel bad a conference yesterday with the Director of the French Postal Department on the question of the transit rates of the Australian mails. It was arranged that the latter should report on the matter to the Minister of Finance, whose decision wou'd be given a week hence. The Agents-General, therefore, who modified their plans, will now await the reply of the French Govornment before proceeding Home. The suggestion of the Osteud route, made by the Agents at the first interview, was used as a means of pressure, and. it is now expected that the concession asked for will be granted. The French Government does not object to the division of mail matter, providing the traffic is guaranteed on the basis of the Convention of 1880.
