Is was used to pump 300,000 gallons of water into the new gas-holder. One of the lengths of hose burst, and the escaping jet of water nearly knocked a workman into the Omaka. We preßumo Mr Piiohard will make the Brigade a handsome donation for the use of the engine. Hathaway, March. Chuck, Millington and Moran. (forwards). ,:; Queer Proceeding. — The Awatere -'Rabbit Board has only been m existence a few months, but it has already done one thing which, m the opinion of many persons m the district, is scarcely fair, A vacancy having occurred by the resignation of Mr Philip Mcßae, the Board has recommended the Governor to appoint Mr 6. B. Richardson m his place. Nobody disputes the legality of this transaction, nor will anyone contend that Air Richardson is unfit to be a member. Bat it is a well understood rule m all local elective bodies that, when a Vacancy occurs, the candidate polling next on the list should be chosen. In this case Mr Coleman, of Avondale, was the higheßfc of the unsuccessful candidates, and hia name should have been sont fco the Governor, even though his views are understood not to be m accordance with those of the majority of the Board It goes without saying that Mr Coleman would have made an excellent member. Nbw Poißoningi Machine.— Mr Powick, of Blenheim, has invented and constructed a very handy implement for the use of poisoners on sheep stations. At present the grain is " spooned " out of the bag by me ma of a flax stick cut thin and hollow at one end, giving rise to many inconveniences, and never making certain that the grain is distributed m equal sized heaps. The new machine has a perforated funnel at one end, which will be sewn into the bag of grain. Inside the funnel is a valve whioh the poisoner cm easily work, and by means of which, without stoop ng or other inconvenience he deposit the grain through a long tube on to tbe ground, Another great advantage^ of this rnachioe, whioh, after Mr Powick patents it, oan ba made at a cost of a few shillings, will be that poison cm bn laid on the highest-nil!'? m the most windy weather. The m v to be gsaotioally tried at once,

The Company's aim being to settle upon their lands a body of well to do settlers, do suofc look for hi^h prices, and have fixed the terms of sale upon a very liberal basis, which should have the effect of inducing a successful sale, The former sale of the Company's land held; mi March last ' was an unqualified success. Lithographic plans may be obtained at the office of this paper. The terms on which the Company offer to sell are far more liberal than any we have heard of m Mariborough. Mining Handuook. — Wo have to thauk the Miaes Deparbrneub for a copy of an official report or handbook which baa just been issued by the Government printer, and is bound and got up m Mr Oidsbury's best style. The book consiata entirely of Miaister of ' Miues statement, Warden's reports, Departmental returns, and other official documents. They are pnc together m a somewhat chaotic manner, the book containing no brief summary of information which would be U3sful to new-comera to the Colony. There is so little to be gleaned out of the Warden's reports that the sendiag them m may now be regarded as an idle farce. So fir as Marlb >rough is concarced the yartioulara gi?en m the book are singularly meagre. It is impossible to accurately ascertain from it how many men are tniaing iv tno province, where they are working, or what success they are getting. The few particulars given on these subjects are obviously only guesswork. We cannot congratulate the Government 011 this latest addition to the official literature of the Colony. #AccoiiMoi)iTiow Houss. — The Waitau Accommoda ion House has been rebu Ie, and is now a thoroughly convenient house of call for travellers. The building is 23 feet high, and covers an area 42 feet square. Tne timber used is rimu and matai. Messrs Brewer and Hay, the contactors, hive carried out the work, the pain ing paperhanging and varnishing having been done by Mr F. Gallop, to the en -ire satisfaction of the ownais of the building and of Mr Caleb Davies, by whom vhu plans were prepared and who supervised the erection. .<p TOTALIBA.T.OK m Danger.— ls is currently reported that the Canterbury Jookey OJub and other leading racing clubs of the the colony have been legally aivised that whether Mr Ciirav/s recent decisioa m regard to the totalisator is upheld or reversed iv the Appeal Court, there is a very simple way by which olubs may protect themselves from those who are mean enongh to demand their mon«y back after they have fairly lost it.
