It could not, therefore, be correct that it accidentally went off at half cock through a defective look. A hard pull, aa the Times says, wa3 necessary to make it go off at half cock at all. We must leave the aathonties to settle the question whether the carbine naa on Thursday last m the same state as on the day of the inqaest. We have no wish to enter into discussion with Mr Winstanley on such a painfal matter, 1 but it ii necmry so say that the statement m his letter that" at the inspection yesterday (msaniag Thursday) there were other carbines which were discovered to ba in a similar condition "is totally unfounded. Ihe only carbine inspected by Captain Bai'Ue on Thursday was the one m question.
