THE FOOTBALL MATCH.

(PROJf OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Nelson, August 27. The following ia onlled from the Nelson Colonist :—

There was a large attendance of the public oa Saturday afternoon, to witness the Interprovinoial Match. Great interest was evinced m the game. The two teams drove to the ground In a coaoh and four at three o'clock. Baddeley won the toss, and decided to defend the Eastern goal. The game was played m four boats of twenty-tive minutes each, lesulting ia an easy victory for the Nelson team by three goals and seven tries to nil. Fulton, the Marlborough captain, kicked off, and Baddeley essayed a ran. He was smartly caught by the Marlboroagh forwards. This was followed by loose scrimmaging close to the Nelson goal. The ball gradually worked down to the Marlborough line, and D. F«lton kicked well down to the opponent's goal. Wither with a smart run returned it again. After some passing by the Nelson backs, the ball was soon carried into Marlborough quarters, but secured by Blakeley, who brought it out, and with a good kick landed it Into the side touch thus gaining good ground. After another scrimmage the Nelson captain scoured the ball, and smartly ran behind their opponents' goal posts. Wither was entrusted with the kick, but failed. Time wis then oalled. In the second bout Walker kicked, the Nelson forwards following up smartly, I and Oldham was soon behind his foes' goal-line. Wither had another kiok, again failed to score more than a try. J. Fuiton brought the ball ont 25 yards and then kioked off. Walker got the leather, and made|a run, getting close to the opponents' goal. ' He wni well collared by Gentry. Scrimmaging followed, and Baddely, with another run was soon behind the Marlborough quarters. The kiok was entrusted to Askew, but with no better result than Withers attempt. The ball was quiokly m thefield of play, but Mibjn soon touched down m the Mnrlborongh line, and Askew was again unsuccessful m negotiating a goal. In the third bout Pulton kioked off, and Richmond made a good run, oarrying the ball down the field, hut Gentry oame to the resoue, and with a splendid dash through his opponents' looked like scoring, but Baddeley man- ! aged to drive him into touch. Soon '

afterward Baddeley got away and touched down again m the Marlborongh goal. Askew was again entrusted, and succeeded m negotiating Nelson's first goal. The Marlborough men were now on their metal, and worked hard, but it wa3 of no r.vail. Lightfoot running into their quarters. Askew again failed to score. The ball waj brought out, and after scrimmaging, tiig'ntfoot again deposited leather behind I bin opponents' posts. Askew failed to put the ball between the goal posts, the ' score standing one goal and six tries. Marlborough lost the services ot its fall back, owing to a collision with one of his own side, necessitating his retirement m the fourth bout. Walker kicked off, and D. Fulton returned the ball. After some scrimmagini; Askew secured the ball, and passing it to Wither, the latter took a pot at the goal, securing the second goal for the Nelson team. The ball was brought out, and the Nelson men got down uearMarlborough's twentyfive. Malcolm took charge of the ball, Gumming returned it, but Richmond gave Wither another try at potting, but he was unsuccessful. Gentry brought the ball out, and some smart play on both sides took place. Eventually Mabin carried the ball over the line, but Walker failed to convert into a goal. The ball being again m play, the Marlborough men struggled hard to score and Wither, with the best rnn of tho day, ran clean m, Walker successfully placing the ball between the posts. Time was called and the match terminated.

For Marlborongh Cleary, Camming, Dodson, sad McCallutn among the forwards, and Gentry, Blakely, and D. Fulton of the backs played well. The members of the Marlborongh team were entertained by the Nelson men on Saturday evening. Several toasts were drunk m champagne, and a pleasant time was spent, 10-night a dance is beiDg organised and the team return home tomorrow.
