THE NEW ARCHBISHOP OF CANTERBURY.

Edward White Benson, D.D., Bishop of Trnro, has been appointed Archbishop of ; Canterbury and Primate of All ' England vice the late Dr. Tait. The following sketch of the new i Archbishop is taken from " Men of the Time" :— Benson, the Bight Rev. EdwarJ White CD., Bishop of Trurn. -m, of Edward White Ucason, Esq., of Birmingham, Heath, aul formerly of York, was born near Birmingham m 1829. He >vas educated at King Edward's School, Birmroeham, md at Trinity College, Cambridge, | of which he was successively Scholar aid Fellow, and where he graduated B.A. m 18u2 as a First Class m classical honors and Senior Chancellor's Medallist obtaining also the place of a Senior Optima m the mathematical tripos. He graduated M.A. m 1800, B.D. m 1862, and D.D m 1807. He was for some years an assistant master iv Hugby School, and ho held the head mastership of Wellington College from its first opening iv 1858 to 1872 when he was appointed a Canon Residentiary and Chancellor of Lincoln Cathedral having been a Prebendary of the same Cathedral for three years previously He was a select preacher to the University of Cambridge (1861-71), and to the UniverBity of Oxford (1875-86.) For several yeara he was Examining Chaplain to the Bishop of Lincoln. In December, 1876 he was nominated by the Crown, on the recommendation of Lord Beaconsßeld to the newly-foimded Bishopric of Truro and he received episcopal consecration m St. Paul's Cathedral, April 25, 1877 The diocese, which has been taken out of the diocese of Exeter, consists of the County of Cornwall, the Islea of Soilly, and five parishes of Devonshire, constituting the
Archdeaconry 6i Cornwall ; with the Chmth of St. Mnry, Traro, as a cathedral. Dr. Benson has published " Sermons prenclied m Wellington College Chapel," 1839 ; " A Memorial Sermon preached after the death of J. P. Lee, x first Bishop of Manchester;" 1870 ; j " Work, Friendship.! Worship"-, 1 ' being l three Sermons preached before the Uni- ( versity of Cambridge m 1871 ; " Boy-Life, its trial, its strength, its fulness," "Sundays m Wellington College, 1859-72," Lond. Bro, 1871 ; besides numerous single nermons ; and he is one of the contributors to " The Speaker's Commentary on the Bible." Dr. Benson married, m 1859, Alary, daughter of the late Rev. William Sulgwick, of Skipton, Yorkshire.
