Mrs Malloy— " Shure, Mrs M'Gißni9, an' its rather . poorly yer looking this morning." Mrs M'Ginnis— "Indode, thin, Mrs Malloy, an' it's good reason I'm bavin' to look poorly, Here's the postman just been to the doore to tell me there's a dead letter waitin' at the postoffice ; and I can't fur the life of me think who it is that's dead."

Coal in- Gippsland.— As is pretty, generally known, one of the greatest ilisadvantages under wli'oli- Viotoria guffers v is the absence of a good coal deposit. Any' sign of its existence is , eagerly followed tip, but all explorations have hitherto resulted in disappointment. A discovery has just been -.made which gives a little . more promise than .usual. The locality is in the Strezleoki Ranges, Gippsland, about 12 miles from Anderson's Inlet. Mr Murray of the Mining Department, who lately inspected the place, saw one seam of 14 inches to 19 inches in thickness, the coal being of great excellence,; and appearing to be superior in beating power to.the New Sputh Wales coal. In another shaft, at a depth of Sft, there is a seam from 24i0 to 27iu in thickness, wnioh, if followed into the hill, it is thought'-will be found to be a thoroughly, good marketable coal Speaking generally .Mr Murray considers there is a large area of coal in this district, and he thinks the discovery "as promising as, if not more so, than any other known oscurrence of coal in Victoria." He recommends that the district should' be thoroughly tested," /, (■ ' .. ■'■ \ : ; .;?, i. ■
