A WIFE ACCIDENTALLY SHOT BY HER HUSBAND.

A very painful accident occurred at about five o'clock yesterday evening, the particulars to hand being as follows :-=- Yesterday afternoon three men who had walked all the way from "Waimate went to Stewart Hamilton's boarding-house m High-street, with the view of obtaining lodgings. They had come to Timani to enrol m the Armed Constabulary, having learnt that volunteers m the reserve force were required Finding no ono at the boardinghouse, one of the trio proceeded down town, where ho met Hamilton, who informed him that he and Mrs Hamilton would shortly be at home. The man returned, and at five o'clock Hamilton and his wife put m an appearance, and entered their lodging-house together with the three travellers. The latter stated the object for which they had come to Timaru, and one of them, named Sampson, produced a revolver, which he said he had used (and there is no reason to doubt his word) m the Kaftir war at the Gape. Hamilton took up the revolver to examine it, and, not knowing that it was loaded, pulled the trigger. One of the chambers exploded, the ball lodging m his wife's groin, and inflicting an ugly wound, which bled profusely. Dr Lovegrove was quickly m attendance, and the woman was removed to the Hospital, where, on examination, it was found that the wound was a most serious one. It will require great skill and care to save the poor woman, who has passed middle age. The affair seems to have been the result of a pure accident. — "Timaru Herald."
