SUDDEN DEATH. [united pbess association.] Wellington, This Day. The conference of delegates of local bodies resumed its sittings to-day. There were only ten members present. The following resolutions, movei by Mr MoArthur, were carried :— l. That this Conference is of opinion that the position of local bodies throughout New Zealand is such that they cannot satisfactorily fulfil the object for which they were established unless some legislation takes place, which will put them m a better financial position. 2. That by the withdrawal of subsidies and the land fund, without any substitute for the assistance so withdrawn from local bodies, the effective settlement of the country districts of New Zealand, and thereby the whole colony, has been retarded. 3. That it is an imperative necessity to provide, out of the proceeds of the sale of any block of Crown lands, funds sufficient to complete roads within each block within reasonable time. The following is the total railway revenue for the four weekly period ending 31st March : North Island £15^020 17s Id ; Middle Island, £60,497 12s sd ; total, £75,518 9s 6d. Expenditure—North, £10,877 6s lid; Middle, £29,728 15s sd ; total, £50,606 2s 4d. Per cent of revenue to date— North, 71.36 ; Midi 'c, 60.00 ; average, 62.40. The total takings of the Wellington Indnstrial Exhibition were £380, and the expenses £200. Christchdzch, This Day. There is heavy rain, and some of the northern rivers are flooded. Badsworth is scratched for the Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap. The well-kuown thoroughbred entire, Perkin Warbeck, died yesterday. A furious gale from the south-west, accompanied by heavy rain, commenced yesterday evening, and still continues. Large trees have been extensively damaged, and others blown down. The low-lying parts of the town are flooded. The rivers are very high, some overflowing their bankß m places. Cbomwell, This Day. A young man named Clement Bushel], was committed for trial for a brutal assault with intent on an elderly woman named Mrs Cameron, at Albert Town. TmAnn, This Day.
