The Spectator doubts whether the Catholic support of Mr Service in Victoria, tending, as it does, to identify him with the interests of denominationalism, may not cause a re-action in favor of Mr Berry. The Spectator therefore considers that Mr Service and his colleagues wdl not be able to withstand for long the opposition that Mr Berry will be in,a position to command. [reuter’s telegram’s.] Melbourne, March 18. Mr David Syme, proprietor of the Melbourne A ye, lias instituted an action agsmst the propi’etors of the Melbourne Punch for libel. Damages are laid at £5,000. March 19. It is stated here that the New Zealand Rahway Commission is desirous of securing the services of Mr Thomas Higinbotlmm, the former Engineer-in-chief for Railways in Victoria. It is further stated that Mr Higihbotham has been communicated v’.th from New Zealand. Svdney, 18th March. The steamer Chaudernagore has arrived here, after landing a colonising party at New Ireland. It is understood that two steamers, with a thousand adventurers, will follow shortly from Rome and Barcelona. The original prospectus of the expedition states that it is intended to appropriate North-Western Australia.
