Wellington, Nov. 21. In the Court of Appeal the demurrer m the case of Holt and McCarthy .was argued. Mr Travers and Mr Edwards appearing for the plaintiffs, and the Attorney-General and Mr Chapman for defendant, who is the proprietor of a journal published at Poverty Bay, which copied the Press Agency telegrams from another paper without paying the Agency, and an action for an injunction was commenced by plaintiffs. The defendant demured on the ground that there was no common law as to copyright, and that there was no special statute restricting the right of publication m New Zealand. Mr Travers contended that the question of copyright did not arise and if there was no statute m New Zealand, the common law operated and the plaintiffs had a right of property m these telegrams just as a merchant had a right of property m merchandise. The Court took time to consider its decision. Wellington, Nov. 22. It is stated that a movement is on foot for the establishment of a new Land and Investment Company on a similar basis to the present Welliugton Trust Loan and Investment Company. Proposed capital, LIOO.OOO. The operations of the association would be confined chiefly to the Wellington Provincial District. Of 60 immigrants who arrived from London by the Edwin Fox, about half have been sent to Wanganui, and the remainder, with two or three exceptions, remain at Wellington. The following were the prices : —Wool, m grease,, averaged 6d to 9|d? mixed, grease, 7Jd to B£d £ washed, 9£d to Is l£d, according to condition. Nov. 19. John Cosgrave and Thomas Peacock were the only persons nominated for Mayor. The election takes place on the 27th. James Berth, engineer, was killed at Riverhead. He was struck by a crane. Auckland, Nov. 20. The settlers at Wangarei propose to give a reception to Sir George Grey. Auckland, Nov. 21. Messrs Conyers and Lawson to-day visited the Kaipara railway to decide on the proposed alternative routes. They also met the Harbour Board on Monday to confer respecting the Harbour Reclamation for the Queen-street railway station. Quantities of inferior kerosene are being sold, and accidents are frequent. At the Annual Wesleyan Meeting to-day additional agents were recommended for Maori districts.
