ELECTION OF MAYOR.
The elecKon of a duly-qualified person to fill the office of Mayor of Blenheim took place on Wednesday last. The affair created no little excitement m town, and posters inviting the electors
to vote for each candidate were stuck up lm every conspicuous place. At halt-past four o'clook, Mr. John T. Robinson, ihe Returning Officer, declared the result of the poll to be as. follows :— . Fell, A. G 174 Litchfield, F. J S3 Majority for Mr Fell ... 91 Mr Fell thanked his supporters for having put him m, aud his opponent, Mr Litchfield, for.having carried on the contest m so friendly a* maurer. It had been agreed that they shonldi do so, and they had carried out that agreement.. He did not believe that those who voted against' him had done so because they did not thiuk he would fill the office creditably, but because they considered Mr Litchfield the better man. M r Litchfield, after thanking his supporters, said he was sorry he had not had a better show, but considering the strong opposition he had to contend against he could hardly have expected anything else. He had carried on business m. Blenheim for 18 years, and he would continue to do so, but he would now retire willingly into private life. A vote of thanks to the Returning Officer terminated the proceedings.
