Hugh Traverse, described as a bushriian frcm Tasmania, was charged before W;. F. Hull, Esq., J.P., by Constable O'Sullivan, with being drunk and disorderly. He pleaded guilty, and was fined 5s with Is 6d costs. He was then further charged with using obscene language, to -which he pleaded not guilty, but the offence being proved, he was fined £5 or.in de|aujt to ,b,e codqlnitted to Pictpn gaol for one mouth. Mr Angus M'Lauchlan met with a singular accident on Saturday morning. Having risen to call his servant he was lying down again when he struck his head against the bed and put out both jaws. Drs. Home and Cleghorh were close at hand, and came to his assistance, but it was not without extreme difficulty that they succeeded m getting the jaws replaced, ayain after trying Apr two hours. Mr ia now all right again and able to appreciate the jests of his friends as usual. Omaka. County. — On Saturday a rueetiug of ratepayers m the Opawa district was held m the Council Chamber, Blenheim, when Air Tissiman.took the chair as Returning Olficer. Having stated the object.of the meeting he liud a copy of the accounts for the year on the table. Mr D> J. Eraser proposed Mr George Houlctswprth, the late member, and Dr Home seconded the motion. No other person being proposed the Chairman declared Mr Houldsworth elected, and a vote of thanks to the Chairman closed the proceedings, which ouly lasted a few minutes. Leahy's Breach. t^. A deputation from the Board of River Conservators for the Lower Wairau consisting of Messrs A. J. Litcbfield, C. Redwood, and J. Dalziel, had an interview with the Provincial Executive on Monday last to solicit the assistance of the tioverninent m carrying out the work at Leary's Breach. The deputation was informed that His Honor, would be communicated with upon the snbjeet and if possible aid would he given. The deputrtion having acknowledged the courtsey of their reception then withdrew. We are informed that the Blenheim Rifle Volunteers are making great progress with i their drill, and the attendance is very good for Blenheim. The new SnyJer rifles are expected during the present week. Last evening the Captain informed the company that m future the roll would be called at 8 o'clock sharp at each parade. An- invitation was received from the Renwick Volunteers for a ball to take place at Renwick on July 19. Those Volunteers who intend availing themselves of the invitation are to give m their names to Sergeant Dobb before Friday next. Elliott. -^-.Tlie following appeared m the Colonist on July,, 6. : — An inquest was held last evening at the residence of, Jtihn Symons, Esq. at the Port, touching^ideath of t,he late .Mr Cf Elliott. Dr Bopr m Qieabaence.ol DrSquires'j. acted as coroner, . and Mr .j. C(sirrard was foreman/ -Mr J. .Symons deposed to M^r Elliott calling upon him shortly, af'er 7 p'olqck yesterday morning, that their interview lasted so.he two or. three minutes' and then Mr - Elliott' departed. In about four tninuteß 'afterwards a servant informed him' that someone was lying upon the gravel walk m front of the house, and he at once weut to see who it was, and found Mr Elliott, quite dead, l Dr Scaly deposed to seeing the body of Mr Elliott. On arriving ha found him quite dead. There were no marks of violence. He learnt from Dr Williams that deceased had had two slight attacks of paralysis m time past. Mr Elliott was about 65 years of age, and his heart was very feebl«. He considered the Jcause of death was rupture of a ves,sel on the brain, together with disease of the heart. The jury returned a verdict that Mr Elliott died from disease of the heart. Mb.
