A PROMISING SPECULATION.

A Mr J. Scott writes aa follows to the Ba'larat Slav :—" One vessel m seven months has cleared an average of i£soo per man, and another lately arrived m Hobsoii's Bay has on board thirty tons of pearl shells, which at the average price will realize about £2500. These facts, combined with the revelations made by Messrs Murray and M'Farlane, point to Rediscar Bay as a good place for forming a depot for the fisheries on the New Guinea coast. What the intentions of the Sydney company were, whose vessel came to grief, remains a mystery. I shall, therefore, merely for the present endeavour to point out a few facts bearing on the point. First, it appears from Murray's account there are two mouths to a large river xvhich, unexplored, lead 3 into the interior, and that the country produces cocoa.nuts m, abundance, as also sago. Tlie shores abound m tortoiseshell and pearls, to which may be added gold. It is said now a settlement formed at Katau could not fail to pay if managed properly. The transit by water affords an opportunity of bringing down cocoanuts m large quantities for the manufacture of cocoanut oil, and a good stock of swine fattened on cocoanut; the meat hardened off by a few bushels of Indian corn, would form a profitable stock for supplying the pearl fisheries. Katau would become the resort of these vessels for supplies, as the Bay of Islands was formerly for the whaler?. The exploration for gold should be conducted by one of the prospecting company, a miner with a party of natives, and if gold was discovered, a grant should be obtained by the company from the chief, and ere it became publicly known a good round sum could be made. A grant of land sufficient for tho formation of a township should also be secured m the most eligible site. This alone would amply repay the company. A vessel of 60 tons register might be fitted out. with a good diver to form part of the crew. The shore company should consist of the company's agent and two hands, with a boat of 25 feet keel, or even 20, for exploring the river ; one European would bs sufficient m the boat with a crew of natives, and the other to search for gold also with a party of natives. One half of nett profits to go toslvareholders, the other half to be divided among the working ' adventurers, who might likewise lie shareholders. This is only a rough sketch <>f plan, and should it lie favorably received I shall be happy to furnish information that, may be required as to atuou t of. shares, probable expense of fitting out, &.<!. ; but to 15 to 20 per cent, on capital invest"d might be calculated on m th« first instance, and a few years would ex^nd the operations and enhance the value of shan.-s."
