WEDNESDAY. AUGUST 14, 1872. THE KAIKOURA REBELLION.
“ Givi! me the liberty to know, to utter, and to nrguo ireely according- to conscience, above all other liberties -Milton
Mit. Ingles moved on Thursday last in the Assembly, the first reading of a Bill for detaching the Kaikoura and Araui'i districts from Marlborough, and annexing them to Canterbury, in doing which he stated that the people were unanimously in its favor ! Finding that he had no chance of success in consequence of the combination against it, we presume he informed his co-rebels at Kaikoura of the fact, for yesterday ( Tuesday ) afternoon, they informed him by telegraph that they were •willing to make conditions with His Honor Mr. Seymour. Their modest demand is that “ at hast one-third of the entire available revenue of the district be expended locally under local directions !” If he could and would bind the province to this proposal they were willing to withdraw, but in case he declined they would recommend joining Amuri in a County, or being formed into a separate County like Timaru and Gladstone.” Thus it will be seen that Mr Ingles is working one way and the Kaikoura Committee imagine quite another sort of thing. Over and over again they have declined annexation, and insisted on their formation into a County Counsel and clients are not agreed on the case.
