HAVELOCK NEWS.

(From our Own Correspondent.) A HINT FOR CRICKETERS. Since I last wrote, our little township has been unusually quiet, everyone saving up there earnings for Christmas. Judging from the programme set lorth by the Sports Committee,- we shall have some lino amusements on Boxing Day. There is to be horse-racing, as well as a regatta and athletic sports, and our cricketers also play their return match with the Wakamarina diggers. By the bye, I see your Blenheim Eleven have been putting forth rather loud challenges. We are not given much to what is colonially tei’med “ blowing,” but, I think, if they were to send one down this end of the Kaituna, it would not be rejected. THE COMING ELECTION. Electioneering matters are still progressing. Our present member, Captain Kenny, was up here last week, and was very well received. I think he will be returned again. THE ROAD BOARD. Our District Road Board held their second meeting on Saturday evening last, when Mr. Charles Mills was appointed Assessor. TRADE OP OUR PORT. The timber trade is very bi’isk, the demand being far greater than the mills can supply readily. We have now lying in harbor several fine schooners, such as the Caledonia, Banshee, Jane Anderson, Elizabeth Curie, Canterbury, Mary Louise, and Jane ; the ketches Pelorus, and Mermaid ; and cutters Sandfly, and Patea. I am given to understand that the Government intend calling for tenders for buoying and improving our harbor. It will not be before it was required, as there is a large amount of shipping now trading to this port. MINING AFFAIRS,

The unsettled state of the weather lately has much retarded mining operations on the Wakamarina, and consequently there is but little gold coming down.
