THE PICTON AND BLENHEIM RAILWAY.
It will be remembered that on the 17th of October last a few gentlemen met at the Court House, Picton, to discuss the provisions of the Railway Act, in reference to the Picton and Blenheim Railway, and to see what could be done in the way of promoting the construction of the work. Some doubts being expresed at the time as to whether the Colonial Government were in a position to enter into any contract at the present time, it was suggested that his Honor the Superintendent should communicate with the General Government on .the subject. His Honor did so, and has received the following reply, which has been kindly forwarded to us for publication : Colonial Secretary’s Office, Wellington, 4th November, 1870, Slr, —J have the honor to acknowledg the receipt of your letter of the 20th ult., in which your Honor informs me that you are given to understand that there is a probability of a Company being formed in Australia to construct the picton and Blenheim Railway, in accordance with the provisions of the Railway Act, 1870. In reply, I beg to inform your Honor that the Government will be prepared to consider a proposal for the formation of the Railway in question, if based on the guarantee principle. I have, &c., W. Gisborne. His Honor the Superintendent, Marlborough. It now remains for the inhabitants of those districts interested to bestir themselves, and to consider the best means of giving publicity to the liberal conditions of the guarantee embodied in the Railway Act, 1870 ; and in accordance with a decision arrived at by the gentlemen who first met, we presume meetings will shortly be called at Picton and Blenheim with that object.— Press.
