COMPULSORY EDUCATION.—A NUT FOR TO CRACK.

To the Editor of the Marlborough Express. Sip.,- The Italian Government in 1865 ordered a return of the state of Education within that kingdom, when it was ascertained that out of 21,777,534 people, 16,999,701 were unable either to read or write ! In other words, seventeen millions out of less than twenty-two millions, had no education whatever, at the very head quarters of the Romish Church, which had the uncontrolled sway for many centuries, and swarmed with convents, monasteries, nunnaries, Friars and Priests, Bishops and Cardinals, and was backed up by miracles and Infallibility ! ! Verily, seminariesof education and the “ pure ” Bible must have been very plentifully diffused—at least, so Justitia et Pax was bold enough to assert. —I am, &c,, A Compulsory Educationist.
