The Continental Banks have raised the rate of discount. A large sum has been withdrawn from the Bank of England for the Continent. Bank discount rose from 3£ oh the 2'3rd'tb'6 per cent, oh 4th August; Oriental Bank shares declined to 30. Commercial affairs are disorganised; cotton depressed." ' “
New Zealand January-July sixes, £lO9 to £111; do fives, £99| to £100£; Consolidated fives, £99A- to £loo|-; MarchSeptember sixes, £lll to £113; JuneDecember sixes, £lO9 to £ll. Victorian debentures, £lO7 ; Sydney, £97. Exports to New Zealand increased by £60,000. New Zealand flax in considerable quantities, amounting to 2,343 bales, were offered on the 29th June; there was but littlp demand, and most of it withdrawn ; only about 550 bales sold. Lower prices were had for common, but dearer for good. Flax—£l4 to £32. Canterbury butter was favorably commented on; Tallerman sold some at lOd. The Challenger sailed for Nelson on June 24th, with 70 second-cabin and steerage passengers. The Beautiful Star has also sailed for the same port.
