PRESBYTERY OF NELSON.
The Presbytery of Nelson met in Trinity Church, Nelson, on Wednesday, the 7th instant, and was constituted by the Rev. John Bannatyne, the Moderator. On the motiom of the Clerk, a Standing Committee was appointed on Church property. The Presbytery called for a report, anent Riwaka, and Mr Calder stated the various steps which he had taken in the interest of that congregation. The Moderator then laid on the table of the Presbytery a call from the congregation at Picton to the Rev. John Bannatyne, minister at Takaka. Mr Baillie appeared as commissioner from the congregation at Picton. Parties having been heard, Mr Calder proposed that the call be sustained, and the congregation at Takaka summoned to appear for their interests at a special meeting 1 : of. Presbytery to be held on the second Thursday of October. In proposing this motion, Mr Calder said-he- hoped the people of Takaka would understand that the matter was by: no means foreclosed. The documents laid on the table, and the statements of the . Commissioners from Picton, certainly put the claims of that district in a more favorable light than he had been prepared to expect ; but he believed that the judgment of the Presbytery would be largely influenced by the position taken up in reference to the matter by the people of Mr Bannatyne’s present charge. One thing was very certain,,that church extension movements within the bounds had been seriously crippled by the
absence of that help from the Home churches, he could not but believe would yet be afforded them. The Presbytery met again in the evening for the discharge of- routine business, and it was agreed that the next ordinary meeting of Presbytery should be held in Nelson, on the third Wednesday in January.—Colonist.
