CALIFORNIA AND NEW ZEALAND.

We publish in another column a letter from the Premier of the New Zealand Colonial Government to the Governor of California, congratulating the latter on the opening of direct steamship communication between the two States, and enclosing a number of interesting Colonial publications. The communication is a very handsome overture to closer relations, and fairly indicates the good feeling that exists in Australasia towards the people of the Pacific States of America—a feeling which is cordially reciprocated in California, and is inspired by something higher than commercial avidity. The suggested interchange of plants and seeds is something that we hope will have serious attention in the proper quarters. We have no doubt that Governor Haight would be very glad to co operate with some of out* leading culturists and scientists on this subject, and presume that arrangements can be made for the cheap or gratuitous transportation of such articles as may be officially exchanged, including public documents We call special attention to the very interesting list of reports upon the geography, geology, mineralogy, flora, and resources of New Zealand, which accompany the letters of Secretary Fox. It is evident that Colony has not been behind, if it has not surpassed California, in enlightened attention to economical scientific investigation. Copies of our geological and agricultural reports, and of other works relating to the history, scenery, and resources of, the State should be sent in return. The California Academy of Sciences will, no d mht, open a correspondence with kindred societies in New Zealand, if it has not already done so, and he glad to exchange transactions, as it does already with kindred societies in Australia. It is the intention of Governor Haight to res, ond appropriately to the letter he has received. San Francisco Bulletin,
