SUPERINTENDENCY ELECTIONS.
The following petition to the General Assembly is now in course of signature, praying that the future elections of Superintendents may be by the people, instead of the Provincial Council “ The humble petition of the undersigned inhabitants of the Province of Marlborough, “ Humbly showeth—- “ That the Province of Marlborough was established by Order in Council bearing date the Fourth day of October, 1859, in pursuance of the provisions of ‘ The Hew Provinces. Act, .1858;’ “That under the provisions of the said Act the Superintendent is elected by the Members of; the ’ Provincial Council. “ That since the establishment of the Province, and during a period of little more than ten years, there have been eight elections for the office of Superintendent. “ That the elections of the Superintendent and Members of the Provincial Council have frequently been the subject of litigation in the Supreme Court, involving great loss to individuals and to the Province. “ That your petitioners are of opinion that such litigation was chiefly caused by the election of the Superintendent by the Council. “That your petitioners humbly submit that the election of Superintendent as provided by “ The Constitution Act ” would relieve the Province from the evils which have arisen out of the mode of election of the Superintendent. “Your petitioners therefore humbly pray that your honorable House will take the matter into consideration, and afford such relief as to your honorable House may seem best. “And your Petitioners,” &c.
