A WINTER’S FIRESIDE. Yon snow-clad hills and slaty sky,' Proclaim that winter’s reign is nigh ; ; With crystals glisten every bough, And loudly pipes the robin now j And as the traveller foots the ground, His steps give back a hollow sound. The sun declines with fiery glow Behind yon crested mount of snow ; And shadowy eve with mantle grey, Curtains the short and wintry day ; Thousands of stars shine red and bright, And herald in a winter’s night. Now burns the house-fire fierce and clear, The housewife bids her children near; Their faces innocent and bright, Reflect the cheerful ruddy light— What prattling tongues! what laughing eyes, Oh happy hearth that claims these joys. The little ones now listening, hear Their father’s footsteps sounding near ; They scamper off, .a tiny race, To kiss the loved and honored face ; He with bright smiles and beaming brow. Salutes in turn each lisper now. With sinewy arm he toils all day, Tho’ cares oft cross his humble way, He cheerfully submits to fate — Troubles belong to small and great— Of his cottage home he’s justly proud ; ’Tis the “ silver lining to the cloud.” Domestic bliss, these comforts thine : Why then for worldly riches pine ? Such scenes of love wealth cannot buy— Nature I love without alloy ; Let those who list these joys deride, Grant me a happy fireside. J. F. H. May, 1870:
