COLONIAL RIFLE CONTEST.
(From the Wellington Independent, April 30.) The Annual Colonial competition for the Championship of the Colony, and the usual prizes offered by the General Government, took place at Dunedin on the 27th, 28th, and 29th inst. The following is the result of the firing : FIRST DAY. Weather cold and wet; showers of rain and sleet. Judging Distance Prizes.—At such distances, not exceeding 600 yards, as may be appointed by the officer in command of the firing party ; 5 shots in the whole to be tired by each competitor, who will judge his own distance. Ist prize, £9 ; 2nd do, £8 ; 3rd do, £7. 1— Hazard (Thames) ... ... 18 2 Wilson (Otago) ... ... ... 18 3 Cameron (Christchurch) ... ... 18 First Set of Prizes.—At ranges of 300, 400, and 500 yards; 6 shots at each range. Second Set of Prizes.—At 400, 500, and 600 yards; 7 shots at each range. Fourth Set, Running Prizes. At 200 yards. Time, 5 minutes, to commence at first,shot; competitors to come loaded, but not capped, to the firing point; after every two shots, the competitor to carry his rifle, ammunition, rod, and everything he makes use of in firing, round a post 50 yards off, loading when he likes, but not capping until he arrives at the firing point. ■he Champion Belt, Gold Medal, and thesum of £4O, goes to the highest agregaf scorer in the Ist, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and Stljsets. This year the fortunate Ohampid is Lieut. Goldie, of the Port Chalmers Naal Brigade, whose score was 180. Iliere were special prizes for Cadets, eaq Cadet corps sending one representative but none of those sent succeeded in majing the required minimum score, diis is the fourth year that Otago has talon the Champion Belt.
