THE AUCKLAND PRESS.

Me. Gillies, the rival of Mr. Williamson, for the Auckland Superintendency, has fallen foul of the local press, which for some reason, has opposed him pretty strongly. In reference to this he said in a recent speech :—I would not say anything disrespectful of the Press, because, on the whole, it is an institution to which we owe much, and to which we must look as the protector, to a very large extent, of our liberties. There is an amusing little Yankee poem, which I think expresses the position of these people exceedingly well, and which I will read to you, It is called “ The Pius Editor’s Creed,” and the writer says : “ I du believe with all my soul In the gret Press’s freedom, To pint the people to the goal, An’ in the traces lead’ em. Palsied the arm that forges yokes, At my fat contracts squintin’. An’ withered be the nose that pokes inter the Gov’ment printing’.” “ I du believe in prayer an’ praise To him that hez the grantin’ O’ jobs—in everythin’ that pays, But most of all in cantin’ ; This does my cup with marcies fill, This lays all thoughts o’ sin to rest, — I don't believe in princerple, But, O, I du in interest. “ I du believe in bein’ this Or that, ez it may happen One way or t’other—hendiest is To ketch the people nappin’ ; It aint by prjncerples nor men My preudent course is steadied, — I scent wich pays the beat, an’ then Go into it baldheaded.” I think that the Yankee editors creed is pretty much the creed of some—l will not say all—of the newspaper editors in this colony.
