MARLBOROUGH CUSTOMS DUTIES.

The following is a statement of the Duties paid in Marlborough during the quarter ending September 30th last:—■ Wairau Pic’ n Havl’k Kaikora

—From the above it will be seen that £967 was paid as duty on Spirits alone during three months, representing, at an average of £1 a gallon, an unproductive expenditure of no less than £1,612 ; Wine shews a total of 355 gallons consumed, yielding a revenue of £7l ; Ale in bottle forms only a small item, £6, and is evidently only a single shipment of 96 gallons, (what could have been the inducement to import it in these days of Dodson’s beer 1) ; £206 was paid as duty on Tobacco, a similarly unprofitable item ; £l4 on Sheepwash Tobacco might have been saved by growing it ourselves, as some of our astute farmers can testify; of Tea, 1680Ibs. have paid a duty amounting to £42 ; while Sugar and Molasses have paid £B9 of duty. Lastly, the totals, compared with the corresponding quarter of 1868, show a decrease of £76 in the Wairau ; an increase of £34 at Picton ; an increase of £56 at Havelock; and an increase of £3OO at Kaikoura. The last item may be counted clear gain, inasmuch as the duties now paid at that port were hitherto paid in Wellington. It does not follow, however, that these figures show the whole or more than a proportion of the goods consumed here, since one large district gets all its goods “ duty paid,” and but a few of our merchants pay their duties here, a matter in which there is much room for improvement, as it is not only their duty but their interest to pay Customs where their goods are consumed.
