PROSPECTS OF PEACE.

The Post of the 11th says : —“ The Government have received information that Mr. M'Lean had gone into the Waikato country, having by last advices reached as far as Alexandra. An interviewwith the King natives had been aranged/ which was to take place about the middle of the Waikato almost immediately. The greatest enthusiasm is manifested by the Kingites in reference to this interview, from which things are expected ; their conduct, in fact, being the very opposite, to what it was when, at the instance of, the late Ministry, they gave a sort of sulky half acquiescence to meet the Duke of Edinburgh and the Governor. Nothing can be of more importance to the well being of the Colony than the establishment of permanent satisfactory, relations with the King party, and this desirable object seems on the point of accomplishment, as there is little fear that Mr. M‘Lean will disappoint the Maoris in the expectations they have formed of his

desire to treat them with justice and consideration,”

On Saturday last we received the following telegram from our Wellington correspondent, which we published in an Extra that day, showing that Mr. McLean has been successful; — Wellington, Saturday, 12 noon. A Telegram just received from the Governor states that Mr. M’Lean has arranged preliminary terms of Peace with Tawhiao, (the Maori King), Rewi, and their adherents. The Governor holds himself in readiness to join M’Lean in Waikato, whenever M’Lean thinks it desirable.
