AN EXPLANATION.
To the Editor of the Marlborough Express. Sib, —Will your kindly allow me in your columns to contradict assertions made in your journal, also in the Picton Press, viz.—ln your leading article, of the 30th ult., I find you state I am opposed to a Drainage Act, and you appear to assume I am also unfavorable to the welfare of the settled districts. In the Press they report me to have stated I would oppose any Road Act. In answer I can only say both-statements are incorrect; whoever reported from Mount Pleasant either did not hear distinctly, or made a mistake. I have always beeh in favor of a good Country Roads Act (compulsory, but not a onesided affair to suit only tne convenience of party or class, but to benefit those - who were taxed to support them. ) With regard to a Drainage Act, I can appeal to anyone that is acquainted with my position, whether 1 should be likely to oppose it; and ever since we have been in existence as
a Province I have advocated the interests of the settled districts in particular, and if I had been returned a member of Council I would not have joined any parly for party purposes. I remain, &c., Samuel Bowler.
