ABYSSINIAN TUBE WELLS.

Mn- M'Gregor, of the firm of M‘Gregor and Campbell, smiths and engineers, of Greymoulh, has for some days past been actively engaged in sinking an artesian well upon the premises of Messrs Strikd and Blackmore, the well-known brewers, and we can only hope that the experiment will prove successful. Up to last evening, an iron tube had been driven into the ground to the depth of over sixty feet, and it had been ascertained that water had risen in the pipe to a height of forty feet. This morning another length was added, and the driving by monkey pressure was continued. Ih6 calculation

of Mr. M'Gregor is, that a depth will be reached considerably below any action or influence of the sea, and that water will be reached which, coming from the higher terraces of the ranges w ill, in seeking its original level, flow through the pipe, and rise sufficiently high to give a large and constant supply of pure water so essentia! for brewing purposes. In the descent of the tube the body of a tree was penetrated at a depth of forty feet from the surface of the ground, as was ascertained by a large quantity of wood fibre which entered the perforations at the bottom of the tube and were drawn up by a temporary pump attached to the piping. After this depth bad been struck, n solid block of hard stone was reached and the great resistance it offered was not overcome by immense labor, and with all the pressure which the appliance at command could be brought to bear on the upper portion of the tube. Tomorrow operations will again be commenced. Star.
