(From our own Correspondent). Proceedings in the Assembly. Attitude of the Opposition - Preparations for the Battle! Impending sale of the N.Z.S.N. Co. Departure of Prince Alfred without meeting the Maori King. Wellington, Friday, 6 p.m. On Wednesday, Mr. Nath. Edwards, of Nelson, moved the Address in reply to the Speech, guarding himself at the same time against being pledged thereby to support the Government. Mr. Swan ( Thames,) seconded very briefly. A few words only were spoken by three or four of the other members. The Reply passed nem con, the whole proceedings occupying less than an hour.
Thursday’s sitting was taken up with the appointment of formal committees. A Postal committee was formed to fix upon the Mail routes to Australia, and to decide on tenders received for various routes.
To-day there has been nothing important done. The Opposition are awaiting the arrival of their Otago and Canterbury supporters. A deciding motion will probably be tabled on Tuesday or Wednesday next. The N. Z. Steam Navigation Co. have decided to accept £3 10s. per share, if the Circular Saw Co. will offer it, which they will px-obably do. The Duke of Edinburgh left Auckland on Tuesday last. The meeting with the Maori king did not come off, in consequence of the latter’s inability at last to make up his mind to visit Ngaruawahia at a definite date, consequently the proposed intention fell through.
