COMPENSATION.
To the Editor of the Marlborough Express. Sir ; —Perusing over your paper last week an item happened to draw my attention—it was that £SO had been given as compensation to P. R. M‘Rae. Now, Sir, I should like to know what that compensation was for. 1 have been amusing myself lately by trying to elucidate the secret, but as yet only two ideas have struck me. Firstly, I thought it might have been because he helped to repair the Taylor Pass road as far as Blarich, but such an idea is ridiculous ; for, if I remember rightly, that road was repaired by means of subscriptions from the various runholders in the Awatere District. Secondly, I had an idea that it was because he had 5,000 sheep on the Awatere Shearing Reserve, and. was compelled to give up the lease. If, Sir, it is for this latter cause, please let me know, so that I may further enlighten you on the subject.—l am, Sir, yours, &c., Curiosity. Nelson, May 27.
