Titokowaru’s followers appear to be sufficiently scattered to justify the hope that nothing more will be heard of them for the present, until they have had time to revive and gain heart. Whitmore, Booth, and Kemp - visited Wellington on Tuesday, returning ou Thursday to the Front. *
As the Taranaki Militia district has since been pi-aclaimed under his command, it is thought he will go there. The programme is prepared for the Duke of Edinburgh’s reception on Tuesday next, 6th April. The proposed entertainments that day and afterwards bid fair to be more creditable than was expected. The Prince is to leave the Colony on the 15th. The Melbourne Mail Service is given to M’Meckan and Co. for 4 months, via Hokitika.
The Wellington Provincial Council are reducing salaries throughout ; the Superintendent’s from £I,OOO to <£Boo. After several nights’ debate on Pharasyns series of 5 resolutions requesting the General Government to absorb the Provincial Government, the first was rejected last night by 15 to 9, and the rest withdrawn. Of those members not voting, 3 were for, and 5 against the resolution.
The rejected resolution was as follows : “ That in the opinion of this Council, the existing system of Provincial Government is no longer suited to the requirements of this Province.”
There is a great uproar at Hawke’s Bay on account of the withdrawal of the G eneral Government agency from Mr. M ‘Lean. The numerous compliments to Captain Benson (late P.H.Z. Co.) on Tuesday last were supplemented by a public presentation of a purse of 100 guineas on embarkation in the Ruahine, for England.
