The debate on Mr. Fox’s “ No-confidence” motion is still proceeding very slowly, and will not close until about the middle of next week. The Opposition are waiting the Government’s promised disclosure of the terms to be conceded to the Country Party. Mr. M £ Lean moved on Wednesday last that “ the House views with alarm the position in which the Colony is being placed by the action of-the Government in the departments of Defence and Native affairs.” The Government insisted that the debate should be adjourned. As the close of Fox’s division, for the adjournment was 38 to 31 ; it is considered as practically showing the state of parties. Colonel Whitmore lias gone to Patea, second in command to M‘Donnell. A public committee has been formed today for raising a subscription in aid of the relatives of the slain. Messrs. Richmond and Graham headed the list with ten guineas each. Mr. Seed is to be Auditor-General during Dr. Knight’s absence —having gone to England on leave. M'Donnell’s despatch is published relating to the fight at Ngutu-o-te-Mauu last week. It is harshly judged. Patea being abandoned to Bacchus, Mr. Booth, the Resident Magistrate there has closed all the public-houses. Government has introduced a Bill enabling the authorities to do so in disturbed districts.
