FENIANISM IN MARLBOROUGH.
To the Editor of the Marlborough Express. Sir, —I shall feel obliged, in justice to myself, if you will allow me space to vindicate the sentiments set forth in your journal, signed “Durante “ Vita.” As a loyal subject, I simply asked you if any steps had been taken by the authorities, as Houghton had made no public avowal of his loyalty, or that he was not a Fenian, at the time of my writing ; and I still regret that he should dare, after such a letter, to couple his name with our Most Gracious Sovereign. Respecting a clique wishing to drive him away, I think any British subject would be justified in doing so in such a cause, although he has glossed it over to obtain your sympathy. I (as well as others) am not at all satisfied that it was a political dodge Yours, &c., Durante Vita. Havelock, 15th April, 1868. P.S.—Did Houghton explain to you what he intended to do with the money collected for Fenian purposes.—D.V.
