Resident Magistrate's Court.
BLENHEIM— Monday, March 2, 1868. [Before S. L. Muller, Esq., R.M.] UNFIT TO BE AT LARGE. / James M'Kinley was placed at the bar, at the instance of his bondsman, who wished to surrender his bail, on the ground that he was unfit to be at large. Thomas Maxted stated that he became surety in this Court for M‘Kinlay, on December Bth, last year, since which lime he had been under his tare. His conduct was most injurious. He had at times locked up his wife, and recently threatened his life, as well as others of his family ; he felt positive that he would, if not detained, commit some violence, and therefore wished to give up his bond, and have the defendant restored to the custody of the jailer. The defendant entered into a rambling statement, in which he acknowledged that he had given his wife “ a few taps ” on the head and shoulder, but would not beat her for a £2O note. The prisoner was then committed to Picton Gaol as a peison of unsound mind, there to remain until released by due course of law.
