WAIRAU VALLEY.

CFrom our Own Correspondent.) February 25tb, 1868. I hereby forward to you an account of a meeting held in the School-room, Wairau Valley, yesterday evening, under the following circumstances:— The teacher of the School having received from the Provincial. Secretary a copy of the Act—“ An Act to provide for the Protection of certain Animals and for the encouragement of Acclimatisation Societies in New Zealand’’—forwarded at the request of the Hon. the Colonial Score-

tary, with a desire that it be hung up in the School-room for the information of the children. The teacher, after perusing the document, considered it essential to make it known also to the elder portion of his neighbours who might otherwise have ignorantly broken its precepts They were therefore invited to the Schoolroom, when the • Act was carefully read to them. After which, many questions were asked, and several of the sections read and re-read, that they might be fully understood ; after which, the following resolu tions were passed unanimously :—•

“I. That this meeting is of opinion that the Act, entitled “ An Act to provide for the Protection of certain Animals, and for the encourage’ ment of Acclimatisation Societies in New Zealand,” will, in its operations, be greatly to the disadvantage of the inhabitants of Wairau Valley, and that a public meeting should be called by advertisement in two newspapers, for the purpose of further considering its principles ; and, if necessary, to rescind its action in the whole of the Electoral District of Wairau Valley.

“2. That in accordance with the first resolution, a public meeting shall be called to take placeinthe School-room on Saturday, March 14th next, and that the chair be taken at two o’clock in the afternoon precisely.”
