Commercial Record.
WELLINGTON. February sth, 1868. Business has slightly improved during the past month. At last we have to report that many articles iu daily use are getting scarce, and prices have considerably advanced. We think we have not had to announce an understocked market for nearly three years previous to this occasion. The Loichardt is now due from London, and her cargo will no doubt be disposed ot at paying prices to importers. Wool is arriving freely. Wo regret to say buyers are very chary iu making purchases, and the very low prices ottered have, in most instances, had the effect of causing farmers to ship the clip to England under advances from the merchants, block continues plentiful, more ) articularly wethers, which can bo had at almost any price ; and until wo have regular boiling-down establishments, wo cannot see any prospect of better prices. With fat wethers, averaging say 551 b, at from 10s to 12s, would it not pay a company, either English or local, to commence a meat-preserving association ? Butter and bacon still continue without demand. Altogether, wo are af; aid this has not been a good season for the country settlers. It may please them, however, to learn that the price of potatoes in all probability will be very high this season. — Independent.
