Sir Joseph Ward (Deader of the Opposition) passed, through (lore by Saturday* evening’s express to Invercargill. Sir Joseph will remain in Southland for a day oi* two. A "Press Association telegram from Pahiatna states that Captain Chiton, it prominent resident, who has been connected for many y’ears with a large number of public institutions, and who volunteered; for active service, was tendered a civic farewell on Saturday night. There was a -representative gathering and the Mayor (Mr Crewe) made him a presentation on behalf oi the- citizens. Major. Clifton also received gifts from the Rifle Club, Masonic Lodge and Methodist Church. A very pleasant evening was spent last Tuesday at- the residence- of Miami Mrs A. Richardson, Wa.verley Street, East Gore, -when a few friends hook the opportunity of ‘bidding farewell to Mr and Mrs T. Barnes and family, who have left for 'Central Otago. The. evening was spent in cards and dancing,' the music being supplied by Mr R. Richardson, jun. (violin) and Mr M. Sexiton (bagpipes). Mr Frank Hoffman danced an Irish’ jig. , A number Oif songs .were 'contributed, and’an <jx-. cehent supper was provided by the ladies. 'Mr Barnes thanked those- present. for their good wishes and expressed the wish that they would all meet again in the near future. The singiim of “Au.ld Lang; Syne” and “For They are Jolly Good Fellows” concluded a very enjoyable gathering. . About 40 members of the railway staff, representing several divisions, assembled oh Saturday evening in the Invercargill railway library to bid farewell to four of the principal officers who are being transferred Oh promotion to other part's of the Dominion. These were Mi* G. Falla, stationmaster. who has been transferred to Auckland ; Mr J. B. Mitchell, traffic clerk, who has been transferred to Wellington ; Mr M. Angus, chief clerk in the district engineer s office, who has been transferred to Christchurch; and Mr G. P. Paris, who has been transferred to Dunedin. Mr T. W. Brebner (district traffic manager) presided, and in proposing the health of the guests made reference, to their many y oo<T qualities as* heads of various dppartnient*. Each had achieved success and hence their well-deserved promotion. Ho wished them success and happiness in their new spheres. Several others spoke and voiced their regret at parting’ with such estimable colleagues. The departing gentlemen spoke appreciatively of the kindly sentiments expressed. A number of other; toasts were honored and songs contributed during the evening. i Mr P, '(stationmaster at Belfast), will succeed Mr Falla a-t Invercargill.
