SOUTHLAND WINTER SHOW.

DISTRICT SUCCESSES. Several district competitors were successful ,at the Southland Winter Show which was opened yesterday at Invercargill. There was a. very large entry of roots, grain, fruits and cookery exhibits. The. exhibit of the Department of Agriculture waa a most interesting one, and was the centre of much attraction dihring the day. Miss E. Mcßride' (Charlton) gained, second priae for lib! fresh (separator) butter, first prize for: fresh separator or factory butter and | second prize for powdered 'butter. Mrs j J. J. Cunningham "((Benio) secured first! prize for non-separator butter, third j prize for fresh butter, and fourth for! powdered butter. In these classes there! were large entries. For faancy butter Mrs Joseph Cooper (Wendon) gained se-' cond prize. Mrs It., ltoss (Gore) ee-| cured! second prize for six scones in a class of *A entries and Miss M. Ross , (Gore) -gained, first prize for six oven I and six girdle scones. Miss Ross was placed third for six oatmeal cakes from 11 competitors. For cakes, etc., Mrs Wadswoi th (Woodlands and formerly of Gore) secured first prize for best sponge sandwich and Mrs R. Ross was fourth. Mrs Wadsworth secured! first prize for fruit cake, and third for plum pudding. Messrs Simpson and Knowler, well known farmers in the Western District, secured the majority of the prizes for potatoes, turnips, and mangolds. For collection of swedes, four varieties, one turnip of each variety, grown by any school in Southland, one entry par school, Dipton School was first, Pukerau second, Drummond third and Te Tua fourth.. There were five entries. In the grain classes Mr J. R. *Keown (Balfour) secured first prize for long Tartarian oats and Mr C. Johnston (Waikaka Valley) second prize for Garton oats, while Dalgety and Co., Ltd., Gore, were placed first for black oat 3.
