THE PRICE OF BREAD.
TO THI; EDITOB. Sir,—lt has com© under my notice that a few residents of Mataura are getting their bread at Gore for 7d per 41b loaf cash. If such is correct it is 'high time that the public of Mataura and surrounding districts demanded a lower rate for their bread from the bakers. Now under the coupon system at Matauria the. bakers have no bad I debts, and therefore can afford to lower j the price. Under the system we are asked to pay not on delivery but before delivery by having to take about a dozen coupons at a time. Now, sir, I can assure you that there is not a working; man at Mataura at the present time with two and up to five or six in his family who can honestly afford to pay 8d for a loaf of bread. I would suggest that the residents of Mataura purchase a 251b bag of flour and do their own baking for a day or two. sending back the bread carts to their respective yards full instead of empty and leaving a batch or two on the bakers' hands, and I am sure that the pr : ce of bread wotfU drop to a fair price.—I am. etc..
