AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS. MELBOURNE. Jan. 25. The first day of the Australasian

A.A. championships attracted an attendance of 3000 people. The weather i was hot, but a dusty north wind pre- ] vailed. The track was in excellent order. The three-mile championship aroused, the greatest enthusiasm of the dav, and it resolved itself into a great struggle between O'Neill (Victoria) aiid Beatson (New Zealand). 100 vards from home, Beatson with a wonderful finish, winning by seven yards. He dropped exhausted after reaching the tape. Power, the American athlete, ran to his assistance, and applied wet towels to Beatson's head and he soon recovered. On leaving the ground he was cheered to the echo. In the high jump Kelly (Victoria) lowered his own record. The points are:—Victoria 3, New Zealand 1. New South Wales 1, and Queensland 1.
