DUNEDIN, April 19. Oats. —The local oat market may be described as firm but inactive. There ist.. only a limited demand! just now from the North Island, merchants in the meantime getting deliveries of •trdera previously arranged for delivery Uk April at pnees considerably below those ruling to-day, and in some oases tfefty are selling back to Dunedin. Taking these facts into consideration, (forth Island buyers are naturally diswnlined to pay the prices being asked! today by local merchants —at least in the meantime. It should be remem-1 hiarod that the North Island Main Urtink railway has opened fair greater, facilities for the conveyance of oats Antm the Wairarapa district to Auckland. and this fact should not be lost sight of in taking into consideration a rastriction of the demand from that sitry. During the week several hundred sacks of B Gartons haye been secured by North Island buyers at 2a 6}d, f.0.b., s.i. Offerings from south of Bnnedin have br-on few and far between, farmers proving strong holders, ntd the little business passing is being ijllM with oats from Canterbury. Miloperated very freely in the market last week, securing several thouutsd sacks. Local merchants are to4kf asking 2s 6Jd to 2ts 7d for A Gartoes, f.0.b., s.i., and up to 2b 6d f«r

Qhfcff. —Tha chaff market has been lightly supplied for the past few days, atai ooosigmnenta of prime quality are ■tasking with a good l demand at better rates than those ruling last week. With, tha scarcity of prime, there has been a fcehker inquiry for inferior lines. Prime heavy oaten sheaf realises £4 to £4 ss; ■Midium to good, £9 to £3 10s; inCafiotr, £2 and upwards. Potatoes. —Consignments of potatoes ■nr pretty well equal to the demand, uul prices have eased. North Island hayrers are inquiring for June, July, •id August delivery, but there is not «Mob inquiry for prompt from this fuvrter. The loaal 'market is at preMdifb feeing chiefly supplied by TaaeriM«n potatoes, not many coming in nun either the northern or the farther sMitb districts. It will be seen from | Mr eable information that there has heera ui advanoe in the Sydney market for TVusmanian potatoes of 15s a ton. Iletbonrsje quotations, however, re■udn practically the same as those W*bi tot Friday. Prime Oamaru, firedilj dug. realises £5 for extra choioe; medium, £4 9b to £4 10« pea■btm, bi&gs in.

CANTERBURY. Pia UNITBD PBESS ASSOCIATION. CHRISTGHURCH, April 19. With moderate supplies, holders firm in their demands, and niajiy inquiries, the grain market is decidedly firm, and no difficulty is found in quitting lines of wheat and oats at the quotations given below. Prices are unaltered. As a result of the continued firmness, the New Zealand Flourmillors' Co-opera-tive Association has advanced the price ,of flour by 10s per ton, the present | rates being:—Sacks £9, 1001b bags £9 ss, sGlb bags £9 10s, 251b bags £9 15s. 'The price of bran and sharps remain unchanged. I The ctat market is strong, and sup- ! plies are short, many growers holding out for prices above the parity, of our- ! rent values. Lines offered on the basis lof the quotations given below find I ready buyers. The bulk of the oats of- ! fered are Gartons, lines of which Jiavo changed hands during the week at pavcres up to 2s 3d per bushel on trucks. Danish is saleable up to 2s Id, and Algerians to tilie saniti price. A fair amount oJ chuff is being placed on offer, and there is some inquiry from outside Canterbury, but the difficulties in the way of securing space have proved a serious deterrent to trade, preventing in numerous instances sales from being effected. Prices remain unchanged. Owing probably to larger offerings, tlie potato market is j| shade easier, and the current price a £3 17s 6d to £4 on trucks, seed varieties realising relatively higher prices. It is reported that this season the percentage of small potatoes is much higher than in some previous yeiirs. SOUTH CANTERBURY'S WHEAT. PBB UNITBL PBBBB ASSOCIATIOH. TIMARU, April 20. Mr J. Talbot, chairman of the Timaru branch of the Farmers' Union, in his annual statement, puts the average wheat yield of this district at not more than 22 to 24 bushels, and l the total' at not. more than two-thirds of last year. Otbec* branches of farming are satisfactory. Ha considers it probable that wheatgrowing will be largely given up owing to (1) the cost of labor and the difficulty in getting it at harvest time; (2) the low prices, which will bo kept down by possible Australian imports under a low tariff; (3) the high wheat freights to Britain; j(4) the working of the defence scheme in taking men away to camp and Leaving teams idle.
