Yesterday the barometric readings indicated climatic disturbances, and this morning at 5 o'clock the glass fell steadily. At 7 o'clock the Government signal guns boomed a warning of an approaching hurricane, and at 9 a gale was blowing at full force, finally dying away at 11.

The soap works were totally destroyed, and the Union Company's unfinished hotel was damaged to the extent of £SOO. The other local damage is light. Communication with the outer centres is interrupted. In the Rewa Valley the sugar cane and banana crops were devastated for miles.

Labasa and Taviuni are safe. The. Tofua rode the gale in the harbor, and the Marama, after having sheltered, reached port safely.
